Description: Fredericksburg, Virginia is located 50 miles south of Washington, D. C. along Interstate 95. Just four miles off the interstate is Old Town with its eclectic mix of shops, restaurants, and historic sites. George Washington grew up in Fredericksburg and the site of his boyhood home, Ferry Farm, is just across the Rappahannock River from Fredericksburg. Other family homes open include the Mary Washington House, his mother's last home, Kenmore, his sister's home and the Rising Sun Tavern, built by his brother Charles as his home, but later sold and operated as the Rising Sun Tavern. Other historic sites include the James Monroe Museum and Memorial Libary, Hugh Mercer Apothecary Shop, the Fredericksburg Area Museum and Belmont, the Gari Melchers Estate and Memorial Gallery. Four Civil War battlefields, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, the Wilderness and Spotsylvania Court House are in the area. Videos are shown at the Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville Visitor Centers. Other Civil War museums are Civil War Life - The Soldier's Museum and White Oak Civil War Museum. Riverside Dinner Theater offers classic broadway musicals with meals served at your table. From May - October lunch and dinner cruises are available on "The City of Fredericksburg". Trolley Tours offers 75-minute narrated tours through the historic district. Old Town Carriage Tours offers daily tours as well as special evening tours.
